The earliest weeks of a puppy's life are very important to how they will live the rest of their adult dog lives. As breeders, we do are very best to ensure that our puppies are placed into a great position for a successful life. In our breeding program there are various ways that this is accomplished. This article will be covering my personal favorite—ENS!
Early Neurological Stimulation abbreviated ENS (cause who doesn’t like a good abbreviation) is a system developed by the military for stimulating puppies to create what is coined as “super dogs” in their breeding programs. Essentially ENS is a series of stimulating exercises completed from day 3 through day 16 aimed to give neurological stimulation to the puppy. Each day they are handled gently by the breeder completing five different exercises. Although this “workout” is brief it has a tremendous impact on the life of the puppy and its mental capacity. There have been tests done to see if there really is a difference in puppies that have taken this “super dog” training and the results found were:
1. Improved heart rate
2. Stronger heart beat
3. Greater tolerance to stress
4. More resistance to disease
5. Better adrenalin glands
We have noticed a few differences in our puppies that have done these exercises versus ones that have not. They do much better on car rides, waiting at vet visits, and have calmer temperaments.
These five simple exercises known as Early Neurological Stimulation are very important in your puppies development and is one of the many ways that your breeder can make sure that you are receiving a fit puppy. However, ENS is not the only thing that your breeder should be doing. Make sure to check in to see that your puppy is getting plenty of exercise, exposure to people, and interacting well with other dogs.
